臨海桜綺譚 The Pavilion in the links(1879)
海を背景に、荒涼たる砂浜の一軒家を舞台に繰り広げられる冒険小説。主人公カースルズ(Cassilis)とノースモア(Northmour)とは、作者の分身である。女主人公クレアラ・バトルストン(Clala Huddlestone)は、その頃、彼が熱愛していたオズボーン夫人を理想化したものである。

I was a great solitary when I was young. I made it my pride to keep aloof and suffice for my own entertainment; and I may say that I had neither friends nor acquaintances until I met that friend who became my wife and the mother of my children.
