宝島 Treasure Island(1883)
英国西海岸のとある木賃宿、少年ジムは母を助けて働いていた。ある日、ビリーという老海賊がやってきた。彼は絶えず、びくびくし、何者かに脅えているようであった。彼は有名な海賊キッド船長の宝のありかを記した地図を持っていたのである。やがて、彼の恐れていた盲目の乞食ピューが現れ、争いのすえピリーは死んでしまう。ふとしたことから地図を手に入れたジムは、地主のトレローニーに助けられ、海賊の裏をかいて勇敢に宝島に出発する。恐ろしい陰謀と戦いののち、海賊は叩き潰され、ジムたちは財宝を手に入れる。

Crawling on all-fours, I made steadily but slowly toward them.

（お前が立派な奴ということはわかった。こう言うよ。ジョン、ホーキンズの味方をしろ、そうすればホーキンズはお前の味方をするだろう。）

Hawkins, will you give me your word of honour as a young gentleman--- for a young gentleman you are, although poor born --- your word of honour not to slip your cable?
（ホーキンズ、若い紳士として名誉にかけて約束してくれるか---生まれは貧しいが、若い紳士として---逃げないという名誉にかけての約束を。）

Silver was a changed man, once he was out there and had his back to his friends and blockhouse; his cheeks seems to have fallen in, his voice trembled; never was a soul more dead in earnest.
（シルバーは一旦外に出て、背中を仲間と丸太小屋に向けると人が変わってしまった。頬はこけ、声は震えていた。こんなに真剣な男はいなかった。）

I've the shakes upon me for the gallows.
（絞首台のことを考えると寒気がする。）

Silver trusted me; I passed my word.
（シルバーは僕を信じてくれた。僕は誓った。）

John, Silver, you're a prodigious villain and imposter---a monstrous imposter, sir. I am told I am not to prosecute you. Well , then, I will not.
（ジョン・シルバー、お前はとんでもない悪党で、詐欺師だ。---とんでもない詐欺師さ。お前を罰しないよう言われている。だから、罰しない。）

Come back to my dooty, sir.
